Speed test: common questions

Wi-Fi, distance from the router, older devices and other people using the connection all lower the result. Test on a cable or right next to the router with other downloads paused.

It depends on how many people are online at once. Browsing needs a few Mbps, HD video around 5 to 8 Mbps per stream, and 4K around 25 Mbps. A busy family home benefits from 60 Mbps or more.

Download is data coming to you, like videos and web pages. Upload is data you send, like video calls and photo uploads.
