An open or weak Wi-Fi network lets neighbours use your connection and can put your devices at risk. These steps take a few minutes and make a big difference.
Six steps to a safer network
Change the router's admin password. The default one on the label is easy to guess.
Use a strong Wi-Fi password of at least 12 characters, mixing words and numbers.
Choose WPA2 or WPA3 security in your router settings. Avoid WEP or an open network.
Give your network a name that does not include your family name or flat number.
Turn off WPS if you do not use it.
Restart and update your router from time to time.
Check who is connected
Most routers list connected devices in their settings. If you see something you do not recognise, change your Wi-Fi password and reconnect your own devices.
